Why You Should Travel to Mozambique?

The question you should be asking yourself is why haven’t you travelled to Mozambique yet.

Not only is Mozambique one of the most popular destinations for travellers living in Southern Africa. But it’s fast becoming a hotspot for international tourists too.

With over 2,400 kilometers of coastline and year-round tropical climate, this Portuguese speaking nation has so much to offer, and then some.

And that doesn’t even include inland destinations such as Gorongosa National Park, and Limpopo National Park adjoining the Kruger National Park. With an abundance of flora and fauna, it’s any wildlife enthusiast’s dream destination.

When you think of Mozambique, you think of the best beaches, fishing charters, scuba diving adventures, mouthwatering seafood, idyllic island escapes, and best beach resorts.

But did you know that Mozambique is one of the poorest countries in the world? That’s right! Even though there is little economic prosperity for Mozambique people, tourists continue to be welcomed with open arms and a smile.

Your Mozambique vacation is made possible by hardworking, resourceful, and friendly Mozambicans. And that’s why everyone should travel to Mozambique.

Driving from South Africa to Mozambique

The places listed above can be reached from South African by car and are ideal for self drive holidays.

In the table below, you can see how far each place is from the nearest South African border. Apart from the first three places in the table, the distance and travel time is calculated from the Lebombo Border.

In contrast, distance and travel time for Ponta do Ouro, Ponta Malongane, and Ponta Mamoli (marked with an asterisk) is measured from the Kosi Bay Border as most travelers visiting these places enter Mozambique from South Africa via the Kosi Bay Border Post.

If you’re travelling to Mozambique from Johannesburg, add 450km to your journey to reach the Lebombo Border Post. The driving distance from Pretoria is about the same.

If you’re travelling from Cape Town, Mozambique is approximately 1,850km away. The driving distance from Durban to Mozambique via Kosi Bay is about 436km.

It’s important to note that the travel time in the table is a very conservative estimation. It includes recommended rest stops every 2 hours or 200km, whichever comes first. And also takes into account toll gates, bridge crossings, expected traffic, refueling, and also driving slowly through towns and villages located along the EN1 national road.

If you’ve read our tips on driving in Mozambique, you’re probably aware that you’ll need to transform into a much more patient driver if you aren’t one already. You’re on vacation after all! So do as the Mozambicans say and conduz com cuidado e boa viagem (drive safely and have a good trip).

💡Useful Tip: Road conditions in Mozambique are notorious for being poor especially after heavy rains. Although you can reach the best places by car, renting an SUV in South Africa will make getting around Mozambique a breeze.

Where to Stay for Travellers Flying to Mozambique

Can you fly to Mozambique? We thought you’d never ask. As much as we love going off the beaten path on 4 wheels, reaching places like Pemba would take days if not weeks of endless driving. We’d rather spend that time enjoying the best places in Mozambique.

Also, a recently married couple’s idea of a honeymoon might not entail spending 16 hours in a car to reach Bazaruto Island. Or perhaps you just don’t have the luxury of time to sit behind the wheel if you’re travelling from afar.

We get that driving isn’t for everyone! Thankfully the Wright brothers invented the airplane. So if you’re flying to Mozambique from abroad, you’ll be happy to know that you too can stay at some of the best places.

Bilene Beach

Living as a local in Maputo province, Bilene always came to mind whenever you needed to escape the city. That’s because the distance is only 180km from Maputo to Bilene Beach, making it a local’s getaway paradise.

But it’s not the proximity that makes this coastal town a popular beach destination that keeps locals and even travelers returning each year. It’s the stunning turquoise Bilene lagoon surrounded by powdery white sand that makes this place one of the best places to visit in Mozambique.

a road sign with a beach and umbrella on it pointing in the direction towards Bilene along the EN4 national road in Mozambique
Make a pit stop at Praia do Bilene, Mozambique

And you’ll find lots of reasons to take that turn off the EN1, drive 33km down a seemingly endless stretch of road just to make Praia do Bilene your home for a few days.

If you do decide to make that turn, here’s some activities and things to do while in Bilene:

  • Bilene Lagoon
  • Restaurants

  • Birdwatching
  • Flamingos
  • Kayaking
  • Bilene Market
  • Beach Bars
  • Sea Turtles
  • Boat Cruise
  • Whale Watching
  • Skiing

Knowing what to do is one thing, but finding suitable Bilene accommodation at a place that’s popular amongst locals may sound daunting. Luckily there’s plenty self catering houses, lodges, hotels and resorts to go around.

💡Useful Tip: If you’re travelling as a family with kids, your children will love swimming in the Bilene lagoon. The crystal clear water is shallow and calm, making Bilene one of the best kid friendly places to visit in Mozambique.

Xai-Xai Beach

If your aim is to escape the crowds, then Xai-Xai is as secluded as you’ll get within the Gaza province. That’s because the distance from Maputo to Xai Xai is much further than Bilene. Attracting less holiday makers and leaving stretches of beaches deserted just for you to stroll endlessly.

But being all alone in the wilderness means you need to be more prepared. With most shops, bakeries, petrol stations, and supermarkets located in the Xai Xai district, self catering accommodation is the way to go in Xai Xai Mozambique.

Located a little further up the road from Xai-Xai, you’ll discover Chidenguele. But still within the Gaza province, it’s a great place if you’re looking to get away from the crowds and get that much needed r and r.

Although there’s not much to do other than to relax, recharge, and eat good food, Lagoa Inhampavala and Praia de Chidenguele are great attractions for water sports. So whether you’re into accommodation with a lake view or you’re just another beach bum, there’s a lodge or resort with your name on it.

💡Useful Tip: If you’re driving further towards Inhambane, make sure you fuel up. The next 24 hour petrol station with a convenience store is located 110km up the road.

Guinjata Bay

If you’ve made it all the way to Inhambane province, then Guinjata is a must stop for all beach lovers. But there’s a lot more to this stunning bay than just Praia de Guinjata.

Scuba diving in Guinjata Bay will bring you face to face with dolphins, whale sharks, mantas and even whales (if in season). Undoubtedly one of the best attractions in the area giving you access to some of the best coral reefs in Mozambique.

But if you don’t have webbed feet and prefer to stay dry, then perhaps you might want to try your hand at angling. And if you’re a seasoned fisherman, maybe even give the Guinjata fishing competition a go and take part in the yearly sport fishing bonanza.

Whatever might bring you to Guinjata, there’s always a place for you to rest your head. Whether that’s a campsite, lodge, resort or self catering accommodation, there’s something for everyone.

Inhambane

Let’s be honest. There aren’t many things to do Inhambane city. Apart from it being the gateway to Tofo and Barra beach, driving through or flying to Inhambane are just one of those things you do as a means to an end.

But the capital of Inhambane province might be more attractive than you think. And I’m not referring to the supermarkets, restaurants, petrol stations or bakeries.

Or even the central market which I totally recommend spending a few hours walking through and bartering for handmade arts and crafts and capulans (sarongs). And ending off at beach bar at Inhambane Harbour drinking a 2M cerveja while enjoying views of the bay.

Wander the central market in the city of Inhambane Province

No. I’m referring to Inhambane accommodation as an alternative to Tofo and Barra. That’s right! Places to stay in Inhambane Mozambique tend to be much cheaper and are a great option if places at the beach are packed to capacity. Especially during peak season.

Tofo Beach

If diving by day and moonwalking by night is your thing, Tofo Beach will feel like heaven on earth. World renowned for scuba diving with whale sharks, sea turtles, and manta rays, and famous for beach bars for the most unforgettable nightlife experience, Tofo is the place to be.

But everyone is welcome in Tofo Mozambique! As long as you love sand in between your toes, the sun on your face and the scent of sea water in the breeze, Praia do Tofo is the perfect hideaway spot where time seems to standstill.

With all that time on your hands, finding things to do in Tofo Mozambique will be hassle-free. Here’s what you might want to get up to when you’re not lazing in a hammock:

  • Scuba Diving
  • Surfing
  • Nightlife
  • Seafood
  • Tofo Beach
  • Snorkeling
  • Camping
  • Beach Bars
  • Restaurants
  • Tofinho Beach

Stay up to admire the sunrise at Praia de Tofo, Mozambique

Don’t let these Tofo activities distract you. Finding a place to stay whether you’re driving (you won’t need a 4×4) or taking a flight to Tofo should be your main priority. That’s because Tofo accommodation sells like hotcakes.

If you’re late, all the nice lodges, guest houses, resorts, bnb’s, and self catering houses to rent will be snapped up. And you’ll only be left with expensive luxury beach hotels and cheap backpackers accommodation in Tofo. So don’t get caught out and book well in advance.

💡Useful Tip: Inhambane Airport to Tofo is only 21km by car. So if you plan to fly to Inhambane, Tofo is small enough to get around by foot as long as you’re staying in the center near Tofo Beach.

Barra Beach

Unlike it’s popular sister Tofo, Barra Mozambique is where you go to find your zen. After you arrive and disconnect, you simply relax, sunbathe, eat, sleep, and repeat. In that order!

Everything there is to do in Tofo Beach, you can do at Barra too. There’s world class diving (some at the same dive sites), lively beach bars, fishing, delicious seafood, and of course there’s Barra Beach. With powdery white sand to make your tan pop and crystal clear cool water to keep you calm and refreshed.

But Barra is the only place where you can enjoy the most epic sunsets. The only place where you can greet the day with a beautiful sunrise over the Mozambique Channel. And on the other side of the Cabo Nhamua peninsula in the Barra mangroves, bid farewell to a setting sun over the Inhambane Bay. Truly spectacular!

Bazaruto Island

Possibly the most beautiful place in Mozambique, it’s no wonder Bazaruto is a mecca for honeymoon packages. I don’t blame couples though. Who wouldn’t want to wake up to white sand beaches and turquoise blue ocean water every morning?

But staying on the island doesn’t come cheap! For starters, there isn’t any cheap Bazaruto accommodation available. And second, the only way to get to Bazaruto is by boat, plane or helicopter flight.

a woman smiling and posing on top of a white sand dune overlooking the crystal clear blue waters of the Indian Ocean in Bazaruto Island Mozambique
Enjoy breathtaking views of the Bazaruto Archipelago

That only really leaves day trips by dhow cruise tours and scuba diving excursions from Vilanculos with a stop on the island during a surface interval. So if you’re one of the fortune few to get to stay at Bazaruto, there are a few beachfront properties to chose from.

💡Useful Tip: The sand dunes on the island get extremely hot during the day, especially in summer. So if you plan to climb to the top to enjoy the views of the Bazaruto Archipelago, make sure you wear flip flops or water shoes to protect your feet.

Gorongosa National Park

Fancy an African safari? Well, you can’t travel all the way to east Africa without seeing the animals. That’s where Gorongosa comes in.

The national park, also referred to as parque nacional de Gorongosa, is a result of a 20 plus year concerted effort to revive and protect the biodiversity in the area. The project, which is led by philanthropist Greg Carr, has proven to be quite a success as the park is now seeing an increase in wildlife population.

If you’re a wildlife enthusiast, you’ll be pleased to know that animal sightings at Gorongosa National Park include:

  • Lion
  • Painted-wolf
  • Leopard
  • Elephant
  • Buffalo
  • Crawshay’s Zebra
  • Blue-wildebeest
  • Sable Antelope
  • Nyala
  • Kudu
  • Hippos
  • Crocodiles

The real winners of the project are you and I. Not only because animals are back in numbers improving the ecosystem. But the game reserve in Mozambique makes it possible to combine both safari and beach holidays.

Gorongosa can be reached by car and plane, and has the perfect accommodation for all nature lovers.
